The Château Dufresne hosted the very first Musée national d’art contemporain du Québec, the MAC, newly created by the government of Jean Lesage who recognized the political value of the arts, hence forth considered defining factors of Québec society.
Although its “Château life” was short-lived—from summer 1965 to spring 1968—the MAC played a crucial roll in the city’s art life. In less than 4 years, over 300,000 visitors were drawn to the presentation of close to 70 exhibitions and to a slew of varied and recurring cultural activities.

The MAC experienced days of glory at Château Dufresne, and this temporary exhibition will awaken memories of an essential period in the sociocultural and art history in Québec.
